List of cryptosporidiosis outbreaks

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cryptosporidiosis outbreaks refer to instances where there is a significant increase in cases of cryptosporidiosis, an infectious disease caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium. This disease affects the intestines of mammals, including humans, and is transmitted through contaminated water or food, or direct contact with infected individuals or animals. Outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis can occur in various settings, including swimming pools, water parks, and as a result of contaminated drinking water. The following is a list of notable cryptosporidiosis outbreaks.

Notable Outbreaks[edit | edit source]

Milwaukee, 1993[edit | edit source]

One of the largest documented outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1993. Over 400,000 people were infected, and more than 100 deaths were attributed to this outbreak. The source was traced back to the city's contaminated drinking water.

North Battleford, 2001[edit | edit source]

In 2001, the city of North Battleford in Saskatchewan, Canada, experienced a significant outbreak of cryptosporidiosis. Contaminated drinking water was again the culprit, affecting thousands of residents.

United Kingdom, 1989-1990[edit | edit source]

Between 1989 and 1990, several outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis were reported across the United Kingdom, linked primarily to contaminated water supplies. These incidents highlighted the need for improved water treatment and monitoring practices.

Prevention and Control[edit | edit source]

Preventing cryptosporidiosis outbreaks involves ensuring the safety of drinking water and recreational water facilities. Measures include water treatment processes such as filtration and disinfection, regular monitoring for contamination, and public education on hygiene practices.
