Lomefloxacin hydrochloride

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic, which is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride is chemically known as (±)-1-Ethyl-6,8-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-7-(3-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid hydrochloride. It is a yellowish-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride works by inhibiting the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to the death of the bacteria and thus, the infection is treated.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin infections. It is also used in the treatment of prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and photosensitivity. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects such as tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Patients who are allergic to lomefloxacin or other fluoroquinolones should avoid using Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of seizures, kidney disease, or heart rhythm disorders.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Lomefloxacin Hydrochloride can interact with other medications such as antacids, sucralfate, and iron or zinc supplements, which can decrease its absorption and effectiveness.
