Louisiana is a state located in the southern region of the United States. It is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Its capital is Baton Rouge and its largest city is New Orleans. Louisiana is known for its multicultural heritage as well as its music and cuisine.

Louisiana was inhabited by Native Americans for many millennia before the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century. During the 18th century, Louisiana was a part of the French and Spanish colonial empires.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Texas to the west. A large part of its eastern boundary is demarcated by the Mississippi River.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The state's economy is largely fueled by agriculture, petroleum and natural gas production, fishing, and tourism, particularly in the coastal region and in New Orleans.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Louisiana is home to many cultures, particularly those of the African, French, Spanish, and Native American peoples. The state is known for its food, music, and festivals, such as Mardi Gras.
