Mohan Foundation

MOHAN Foundation (Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network) is a non-governmental organization in India dedicated to the promotion of organ donation and transplantation. Since its inception in 1996, the foundation has been a pioneer in the field, working tirelessly to increase awareness about the importance of organ donation and to facilitate the organ donation process across India.

History[edit | edit source]

MOHAN Foundation was established in 1996 with the primary goal of promoting organ donation and supporting organ transplantation as a viable and essential treatment option for end-stage organ failure. The foundation was founded by a group of medical professionals, philanthropists, and socially conscious citizens who recognized the acute shortage of donated organs in India and the large number of individuals dying while waiting for a transplant.

Mission and Vision[edit | edit source]

The mission of MOHAN Foundation is to ensure that every Indian suffering from end-stage organ failure is provided with the 'Gift of Life' through a life-saving organ. Its vision encompasses not only increasing the availability of donated organs to save lives but also creating a culture of organ donation in India where it becomes a norm rather than an exception.

Activities and Programs[edit | edit source]

MOHAN Foundation engages in a wide range of activities aimed at promoting organ donation. These include:

  • Awareness Campaigns: Conducting educational campaigns and workshops in schools, colleges, corporate offices, and public spaces to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
  • Training Programs: Offering training for healthcare professionals on the legal, ethical, and technical aspects of organ donation and transplantation.
  • Grief Counseling: Providing support and counseling to families of potential donors to help them make informed decisions about organ donation.
  • Policy Advocacy: Working with government bodies to improve the policies and legal framework surrounding organ donation and transplantation in India.
  • Transplant Coordination: Facilitating the process of organ donation and transplantation by coordinating between donor families, hospitals, and transplant centers.

Achievements[edit | edit source]

Over the years, MOHAN Foundation has made significant contributions to the field of organ donation in India. Some of its notable achievements include:

  • Increasing public awareness and acceptance of organ donation through widespread campaigns and initiatives.
  • Facilitating thousands of organ donations, thereby saving numerous lives.
  • Training a large number of transplant coordinators and healthcare professionals in the field of organ donation and transplantation.
  • Influencing policy changes at both the national and state levels to create a more conducive environment for organ donation.

Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its achievements, MOHAN Foundation faces several challenges, including:

  • Cultural and religious beliefs that deter organ donation.
  • Lack of awareness and misinformation about organ donation among the general public.
  • Inadequate infrastructure and support for organ donation and transplantation in many parts of India.

Future Directions[edit | edit source]

MOHAN Foundation continues to work towards overcoming these challenges and achieving its vision. Future directions include expanding its awareness campaigns to more regions, enhancing training programs for healthcare professionals, and advocating for further improvements in the legal and policy framework surrounding organ donation in India.
