Malagos Chocolate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Malagos Chocolate is a single-origin, tree-to-bar chocolate brand from the Philippines. It is produced by the Puentespina family in the Malagos district of Davao City, on the island of Mindanao. The brand has gained international recognition for its fine flavor and quality.

History[edit | edit source]

The Puentespina family, who are known for their agricultural ventures, started the Malagos Agri-Ventures Corporation in 2003. They initially planted cacao trees as intercrops for their existing orchid farm. By 2012, they began producing single-origin chocolate products under the brand name Malagos Chocolate.

Production[edit | edit source]

Malagos Chocolate is a tree-to-bar chocolate, meaning the entire chocolate production process, from growing the cacao trees to processing the beans into chocolate bars, is done on-site. This allows for greater control over the quality and flavor of the chocolate. The cacao beans are fermented, dried, roasted, and ground into a paste, which is then tempered and molded into chocolate bars.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

Malagos Chocolate has received numerous awards from prestigious international chocolate competitions. In 2015, it won a Bronze Award at the Academy of Chocolate Awards in London, and in 2017, it won a Silver Award at the same competition. It has also been recognized by the Great Taste Awards in the United Kingdom and the International Chocolate Awards.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The success of Malagos Chocolate has had a significant impact on the local economy. It has created jobs and provided a stable income for many local farmers. It has also helped to promote the Philippines as a producer of high-quality, single-origin chocolate.
