The Mallika is a hybrid variety of mango that was developed in India by combining the Neelum and Dasheri varieties. It is known for its unique taste, rich aroma, and vibrant color.

The Mallika mango was developed as part of a mango breeding program initiated by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi, India. The program aimed to create new mango varieties that would combine the best characteristics of existing varieties. The Mallika mango was the result of a cross between the Neelum and Dasheri mangoes, two popular varieties in India.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The Mallika mango is a late-season mango, typically harvested in June and July. The fruit is medium-sized, averaging about 500 grams in weight. It has a thin, smooth skin that turns from green to a bright yellow-orange when ripe. The flesh is deep orange, fiberless, and has a rich, sweet flavor with hints of honey and citrus.

Mallika mangoes are grown in several regions of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. They are also cultivated in other countries with suitable climates, such as the United States and Australia. The trees are relatively small and compact, making them suitable for small-scale and backyard cultivation.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Mallika mangoes are primarily consumed fresh, but they are also used in a variety of culinary applications. They can be used to make mango lassi, a popular Indian yogurt-based drink, as well as mango chutney, mango pickle, and mango desserts.
