Manilita

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Manilita is a variety of mango that originates from Mexico. It is known for its unique flavor and small size compared to other mango varieties.

History[edit | edit source]

The Manilita mango was first cultivated in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. It is believed to have been introduced to the region by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The name "Manilita" is derived from the Spanish word for "little hand", which refers to the small size of the fruit.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Manilita mangoes are small in size, typically weighing between 150 and 200 grams. They have a thin, smooth skin that is bright yellow when ripe. The flesh of the Manilita mango is deep orange, juicy, and very sweet. It is less fibrous than other mango varieties, making it particularly enjoyable to eat.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Manilita mangoes are grown primarily in the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Nayarit. They are typically harvested in the late spring and early summer. The trees are relatively easy to grow and are resistant to many common mango diseases.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Manilita mangoes are often eaten fresh, but they can also be used in a variety of dishes. They are popular in Mexican cuisine, where they are used in salads, salsas, and desserts. They are also used to make mango juice and mango jam.
