Mayo Clinic

History

The origins of the Mayo Clinic date back to 1864 when William Worrall Mayo (1819–1911) settled in Rochester, Minnesota. The Mayo practice grew and became known for its treatment of patients following a devastating tornado in 1883. Dr. Mayo, along with his two sons, William James Mayo and Charles Horace Mayo, formally established the Mayo practice as the Mayo Clinic in 1919.
