MenACWY

MenACWY is a vaccine used to prevent meningococcal disease, caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. This vaccine protects against four types of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.

Overview

The MenACWY vaccine is recommended for all 11 to 12 year olds, with a booster dose at 16 years old. It is also recommended for certain high-risk groups, including people with certain immune system disorders, microbiologists who are routinely exposed to Neisseria meningitidis, and people traveling to or living in countries where the disease is common.

Effectiveness

The MenACWY vaccine is highly effective at preventing meningococcal disease. It is estimated to be 85-100% effective at preventing infection with types A, C, W, and Y.

Side Effects

Common side effects of the MenACWY vaccine include pain and redness at the injection site, headache, fatigue, and muscle pain. Serious side effects are rare, but can include severe allergic reactions.

Administration

The MenACWY vaccine is given as an injection into the muscle. The vaccine is usually given in two doses, with the first dose given at 11 or 12 years old and a booster dose given at 16 years old.
