Metro-North Railroad

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Metro-North Railroad is a suburban commuter rail service run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). It is the second-largest commuter railroad in the United States in terms of annual ridership, serving approximately 86.5 million passengers in 2019. The railroad's main lines run north from New York City to Hudson Valley, Connecticut, and beyond.

History[edit | edit source]

The Metro-North Railroad was established by the MTA in 1983 to take over the operations of the bankrupt Penn Central Transportation Company. The railroad's operations have since expanded to include service to Poughkeepsie, New Haven, and Spring Valley.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Metro-North operates over three main lines: the Hudson Line, the Harlem Line, and the New Haven Line. Each line offers different levels of service, with the New Haven Line being the most heavily used. The railroad also operates several branch lines and shuttle services.

Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

The Metro-North Railroad operates over a network of approximately 775 miles of track, with 124 stations. The railroad's infrastructure includes numerous bridges, tunnels, and maintenance facilities.

Safety and Security[edit | edit source]

Metro-North has implemented a number of safety and security measures, including the installation of Positive Train Control systems and the use of Transportation Security Administration guidelines.

Future Developments[edit | edit source]

The MTA has several plans for the future of the Metro-North Railroad, including the Penn Station Access project, which will provide direct service from the New Haven Line to Penn Station in Manhattan.
