Michael J. Klag

Michael J. Klag is an American physician, researcher, and academic administrator. He is best known for his tenure as the 14th dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a position he held from 2005 to 2017.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Klag was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1974, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1978. He later completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1987, Klag joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine. He was promoted to associate professor in 1993, and to full professor in 1998. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins, Klag's research focused on the epidemiology of kidney disease and hypertension, and he published numerous articles in these areas.

In 2005, Klag was appointed dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth in the school's research and education programs, and led efforts to improve public health in Baltimore and around the world. Klag stepped down as dean in 2017, but remains on the faculty as a professor of epidemiology.

Honors and awards[edit | edit source]

Klag has received numerous awards for his contributions to medicine and public health, including the David M. Levine Excellence in Mentoring Award from the American Society of Nephrology, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Klag is married and has two children. He resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
