Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the search for a cure for multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Founded in 1998 by Kathy Giusti, a multiple myeloma patient, and her twin sister Karen Andrews, the foundation has been at the forefront of efforts to fund research, advance treatment options, and improve the lives of patients suffering from this disease.

History[edit | edit source]

The MMRF was established after Kathy Giusti was diagnosed with multiple myeloma at the age of 37. Faced with the limited treatment options available at the time, Giusti, along with her sister, set out to create an organization that would play a critical role in transforming the landscape of multiple myeloma research and treatment. Since its inception, the MMRF has been instrumental in bringing patients, researchers, and healthcare professionals together to collaborate on groundbreaking initiatives.

Mission and Vision[edit | edit source]

The mission of the MMRF is to accelerate the development of next-generation multiple myeloma treatments to extend the lives of patients and lead to a cure. The foundation envisions a world where every patient has access to the best treatments and can ultimately be cured of the disease. To achieve this, the MMRF focuses on funding innovative research, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and promoting the sharing of data and findings within the scientific community.

Research and Initiatives[edit | edit source]

The MMRF has launched several key initiatives to drive progress in multiple myeloma research and treatment. These include:

  • The MMRF CoMMpass Study™: A landmark clinical study that maps the genomic profile of multiple myeloma patients over the course of their disease. This study aims to uncover the molecular changes that occur in myeloma cells, which could lead to the development of targeted therapies.
  • The MMRF Researcher Gateway: A data portal that provides researchers with access to a wealth of genomic and clinical data from multiple myeloma patients. This initiative encourages the sharing of information and collaboration among scientists.
  • Precision Medicine Initiatives: The MMRF supports research aimed at understanding the genetic basis of multiple myeloma and developing personalized treatment approaches based on a patient's unique genetic makeup.

Fundraising and Awareness[edit | edit source]

The MMRF organizes a variety of fundraising events and campaigns to support its research initiatives and raise awareness about multiple myeloma. These include charity runs, walks, and gala events. The foundation also works to educate patients, families, and the public about the disease and the importance of research and early detection.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its founding, the MMRF has played a pivotal role in the approval of several new treatments for multiple myeloma, significantly improving patient outcomes and survival rates. The foundation's commitment to research and innovation has not only advanced the field of multiple myeloma treatment but also served as a model for other disease research organizations.
