Nervus phrenicus

Nervus Phrenicus or the Phrenic Nerve is a crucial nerve in the human body that originates from the neck (cervical) region and extends down to the diaphragm. It plays a significant role in the respiratory system, particularly in the process of breathing.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Nervus Phrenicus is primarily composed of the C3, C4, and C5 nerve roots of the cervical spine. It descends along the anterior surface of the scalene muscles, crosses over the subclavian vein, and then travels down between the lung and heart to reach the diaphragm.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the Nervus Phrenicus is to carry motor and sensory information between the diaphragm and the brain. It is responsible for the contraction of the diaphragm, which allows for the expansion and contraction of the lungs during respiration.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Damage or injury to the Nervus Phrenicus can lead to a condition known as diaphragmatic paralysis, which can cause difficulty in breathing and other respiratory problems. This condition can be diagnosed through a diaphragmatic fluoroscopy or an electromyography.
