Old Crow

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Old Crow is a small community located in the Yukon territory of Canada. It is the only Yukon community that cannot be reached by motor vehicle, making it a unique and isolated area. The community is primarily inhabited by the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Old Crow is deeply intertwined with the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. The name "Old Crow" is an English translation of the Gwich'in name for a small tributary of the Porcupine River, which flows through the community. The area has been inhabited by the Vuntut Gwitchin for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of human activity dating back as far as 25,000 years.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Old Crow is located in the northern part of Yukon, near the border with the Northwest Territories. The community is situated on the banks of the Porcupine River, which is a major tributary of the Yukon River. The landscape around Old Crow is characterized by vast tundra and boreal forest, with a subarctic climate that features long, cold winters and short, cool summers.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The culture of Old Crow is heavily influenced by the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. Traditional activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are still important parts of life in Old Crow. The community also hosts several cultural events throughout the year, including the biennial Old Crow Winter Carnival and the annual Old Crow Moosehide Gathering.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Old Crow is largely based on traditional activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping. The community also benefits from tourism, with visitors attracted by the opportunity to experience the unique culture and natural beauty of the area. In recent years, there has been interest in developing the area's mineral and oil resources, although this has been met with opposition from the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

As the only Yukon community not connected to the road network, transportation to and from Old Crow is primarily by air. The Old Crow Airport provides regular scheduled flights to other communities in Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Education[edit | edit source]

Education in Old Crow is provided by the Chief Zzeh Gittlit School, which offers kindergarten to grade 12 education. The school is operated by the Yukon Department of Education and follows the Yukon curriculum.
