Old Potrero

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Old Potrero is a brand of rye whiskey produced by the Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco, California. The name "Old Potrero" is a reference to the location of the first distillery established in California. The brand is known for its unique style of whiskey, which is distilled from 100% rye malt.

History[edit | edit source]

The Anchor Brewing Company was founded in 1896 in San Francisco. The company began distilling Old Potrero rye whiskey in the 1990s, under the guidance of its then-owner, Fritz Maytag. Maytag was inspired by the historical methods of whiskey production in America during the 18th century, and sought to recreate this style of whiskey.

Production[edit | edit source]

Old Potrero rye whiskey is made from 100% rye malt, a rarity in modern whiskey production. The use of rye malt gives the whiskey a distinct flavor profile, characterized by spicy notes and a rich, full-bodied texture. The whiskey is distilled in a small copper pot still, and aged in new, charred oak barrels.

Products[edit | edit source]

Old Potrero produces several different expressions of rye whiskey. These include the Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye Whiskey, which is aged for a minimum of three years, and the Old Potrero 18th Century Style Whiskey, which is designed to replicate the style of whiskey that was produced in America during the 18th century.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Old Potrero rye whiskey has been well-received by critics and consumers alike. It is often praised for its unique flavor profile, which is distinct from the more common corn-based bourbons and rye whiskeys.
