Paperboard is a thick, paper-based material that is commonly used in packaging, graphic printing, and various industrial applications. It is typically thicker than regular paper and is known for its durability and strength.

Types of Paperboard[edit | edit source]

Paperboard can be classified into several types based on its manufacturing process and intended use:

  • Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS): This type of paperboard is made from bleached wood pulp and is known for its high quality and smooth surface, making it ideal for high-end packaging and printing.
  • Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK): Made from unbleached kraft paper, this type of paperboard is strong and durable, often used for packaging heavy items.
  • Folding Boxboard (FBB): This is a multi-layered paperboard made from mechanical pulp sandwiched between layers of chemical pulp. It is commonly used for packaging food and consumer goods.
  • White Lined Chipboard (WLC): Made from recycled paper, WLC is used for a variety of packaging applications, including cereal boxes and other consumer goods packaging.

Manufacturing Process[edit | edit source]

The manufacturing process of paperboard involves several steps:

1. Pulping: The raw materials, which can be either virgin wood fibers or recycled paper, are converted into pulp. 2. Forming: The pulp is then formed into sheets on a Fourdrinier machine or a cylinder machine. 3. Pressing and Drying: The formed sheets are pressed to remove excess water and then dried. 4. Coating: Depending on the intended use, the paperboard may be coated with various materials to improve its surface properties. 5. Cutting and Finishing: The paperboard is cut into the desired sizes and shapes and may undergo additional finishing processes such as embossing or laminating.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Paperboard is used in a wide range of applications, including:

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

Paperboard is considered to be an environmentally friendly material because it is recyclable and biodegradable. The use of recycled paper in the production of paperboard helps to reduce the demand for virgin wood fibers and minimizes waste.
