Pelotonia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pelotonia is a grassroots bicycle tour and non-profit organization based in Columbus, Ohio. The organization's primary goal is to fund cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Since its inception in 2008, Pelotonia has raised over $200 million for cancer research.

History[edit | edit source]

Pelotonia was founded in 2008 by Tom Lennox, a cancer survivor himself. The inaugural ride took place in 2009, with over 2,200 riders participating. The event has grown significantly since then, with more than 8,000 riders, 3,000 volunteers, and hundreds of thousands of donors participating annually.

Fundraising[edit | edit source]

Pelotonia's unique funding model directs 100% of every dollar raised by riders, virtual riders, and volunteers directly to the OSUCCC – James. This is made possible through funding from corporate partnerships, which cover the organization's operational costs. Major partners include Huntington Bank, Peggy and Richard Santulli, American Electric Power, and L Brands Foundation.

Event[edit | edit source]

The Pelotonia ride is a weekend-long event held annually in August. Participants can choose from a variety of ride distances, ranging from 25 to 200 miles, to accommodate all levels of cycling ability. The event also includes a weekend of community activities and entertainment.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The funds raised by Pelotonia have led to numerous breakthroughs in cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. This includes the development of new diagnostic tools, treatment strategies, and clinical trials.
