Phytophthora parasitica

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Phytophthora parasitica is a species of oomycete, a group of fungus-like microorganisms, that is known for its pathogenicity in a wide range of plant species. It is a member of the genus Phytophthora, which includes other notable plant pathogens such as Phytophthora infestans and Phytophthora ramorum.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

Phytophthora parasitica belongs to the kingdom Stramenopiles, which also includes other oomycetes, diatoms, and brown algae. Within the genus Phytophthora, it is part of the Phytophthora parasitica complex, a group of closely related species that are often difficult to distinguish based on morphology alone.

Morphology[edit | edit source]

Like other oomycetes, Phytophthora parasitica produces sporangia, structures that generate and release spores. The sporangia of P. parasitica are typically oval or pear-shaped and can produce both zoospores and oospores.

Pathogenicity[edit | edit source]

Phytophthora parasitica is a necrotrophic pathogen, meaning it kills host tissue and then feeds on the dead cells. It is capable of infecting a wide range of plant species, including important agricultural crops such as tomato, pepper, and eggplant, as well as ornamental plants like rhododendron and azalea.

Management[edit | edit source]

Control of Phytophthora parasitica in agricultural settings often involves a combination of cultural practices, such as crop rotation and sanitation, and the use of fungicides. Resistant cultivars are also an important tool in managing this pathogen.
