Polydentate ligands are molecules that can attach to metal ions through more than one atom at the same time. These types of ligands are also known as chelating agents because they form multiple bonds with a single metal ion, which can be visualized as the ligand "biting" the metal, hence the name derived from the Greek word χηλή, meaning "claw". The process of forming such complexes is known as chelation, and the resulting complexes are called chelates. Polydentate ligands play a crucial role in various fields, including biochemistry, medicine, and industrial chemistry, due to their ability to form stable complexes with metals.
