Ponceau SX

Ponceau SX is a synthetic coal tar derived azo dye used as a food coloring. It is denoted by the E number E125 in the European Union and is not approved for use in the United States and Canada.

Ponceau SX was first synthesized in the late 19th century as part of a range of azo dyes. Its use as a food coloring began in the early 20th century.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

Ponceau SX is a red azo dye. It is soluble in water and has a maximum absorbance in an aqueous solution at about 507 nm.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Ponceau SX is used in a variety of food products including sweets, drinks, and canned fruits. It is also used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Despite its widespread use, there are concerns about its safety.

Safety and Regulation[edit | edit source]

In the European Union, Ponceau SX is approved as a food additive with the E number E125. However, it is not approved for use in the United States and Canada due to concerns about its potential carcinogenicity.
