Poopó

Poopó is a municipality located in the Oruro Department of Bolivia. It is named after Lake Poopó, a large salt lake situated nearby. The area is known for its rich biodiversity, including numerous species of flora and fauna.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Poopó is located in the southwestern part of the Oruro Department. The municipality is bordered by the Caracollo Municipality to the north, the Pazña Municipality to the east, and the Challapata Municipality to the south. The area is characterized by its high altitude, with the town of Poopó itself situated at an elevation of approximately 3,700 meters above sea level.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the most recent census, the municipality has a population of approximately 10,000 residents. The majority of the population is of indigenous descent, with the Aymara people and Quechua people representing the largest ethnic groups.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Poopó is primarily based on agriculture and mining. The area is known for its production of quinoa, potatoes, and llama wool. The municipality is also home to several silver and tin mines.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The culture of Poopó is heavily influenced by its indigenous Aymara and Quechua populations. Traditional Andean music and dance, such as the diablada, are common features of local festivals and celebrations.
