Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is a public hospital located in Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland. It is managed by the Saolta University Health Care Group.

The hospital was established by the Franciscan Sisters in 1945. It was originally named after the Portiuncula Chapel in Assisi, Italy, which is significant in Franciscan history. The hospital was taken over by the Health Service Executive in 2004.

Services[edit | edit source]

Portiuncula University Hospital provides a range of services including emergency medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, pathology, and anesthesia. The hospital also has a 24-hour Emergency Department and a Maternity Department which handles over 2,000 births each year.

The hospital has 243 beds, including 20 day-care beds. Facilities at the hospital include a Pharmacy, Physiotherapy Department, Occupational Therapy Department, and a Dietetics Department. The hospital also has a Chapel and a Canteen for the convenience of patients and visitors.

Research and Education[edit | edit source]

Portiuncula University Hospital is affiliated with the National University of Ireland, Galway for medical education and research. The hospital is also involved in nursing education in collaboration with the Athlone Institute of Technology.
