Pulmonary thrombosis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pulmonary Thrombosis is a medical condition characterized by the formation of a blood clot (thrombus) in the pulmonary artery or one of its branches. This condition is a type of pulmonary embolism and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Pulmonary thrombosis is often caused by deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition where blood clots form in the deep veins of the body, usually in the legs. These clots can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary thrombosis. Other causes can include certain medical conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and lung disease, as well as prolonged periods of inactivity, such as bed rest or long flights.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of pulmonary thrombosis can vary depending on the size of the clot and the individual's overall health. Common symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Other symptoms can include rapid heart rate, lightheadedness, and excessive sweating.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of pulmonary thrombosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. These tests can include a CT scan, ultrasound, blood tests, and sometimes a pulmonary angiogram.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for pulmonary thrombosis typically involves medications to dissolve the clot and prevent new clots from forming. These can include anticoagulants (blood thinners) and thrombolytics. In some cases, surgical procedures may be necessary to remove the clot.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of pulmonary thrombosis often involves managing risk factors, such as treating underlying medical conditions, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity.
