R-ICE

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

R-ICE is a chemotherapy regimen used for the treatment of relapsed or refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The regimen consists of four drugs: Rituximab, Ifosfamide, Carboplatin, and Etoposide.

Rituximab[edit | edit source]

Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the CD20 antigen on the surface of B cells. It is used in the treatment of diseases characterized by excessive, overactive, or dysfunctional B cells, including many forms of lymphoma.

Ifosfamide[edit | edit source]

Ifosfamide is a alkylating agent used in the treatment of various forms of cancer. It works by interfering with the DNA of cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing.

Carboplatin[edit | edit source]

Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug that works by interfering with the DNA repair mechanisms in cancer cells, causing them to die. It is used in the treatment of various types of cancer, including lung, ovarian, and head and neck cancers.

Etoposide[edit | edit source]

Etoposide is a chemotherapy drug that works by preventing cancer cells from repairing their DNA. It is used in the treatment of various types of cancer, including lung, testicular, and lymphomas.

Treatment Regimen[edit | edit source]

The R-ICE regimen is typically administered over a three-day period. On the first day, the patient receives Rituximab, followed by Ifosfamide, Carboplatin, and Etoposide on the second and third days. This cycle is usually repeated every 21 days for a total of three to six cycles, depending on the patient's response to treatment.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all chemotherapy regimens, R-ICE can cause a range of side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, and fatigue. More serious side effects can include infection, anemia, and neutropenia.
