Responses to the West African Ebola virus epidemic involved several national and international organizations, aiming to control the spread of the Ebola virus that caused the epidemic in West Africa from 2014 to 2016. This epidemic was the most widespread outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in history, causing major loss of life and socioeconomic disruption in the region.

The West African Ebola virus epidemic began in Guinea in December 2013 and quickly spread to neighboring countries, including Liberia and Sierra Leone, with minor outbreaks occurring elsewhere. It was the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded, and the first in West Africa, a region with no previous experience in managing such a disease.

International Response[edit | edit source]

The World Health Organization (WHO) played a pivotal role in coordinating international response efforts. However, the organization faced criticism for its slow response and failure to declare the epidemic a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) until August 2014, several months after the outbreak had begun.

Other international organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the Red Cross, also contributed significantly to the response efforts. These efforts included deploying health workers, providing medical supplies, and supporting local health systems.

National governments implemented various measures to control the outbreak, including establishing Ebola treatment centers, conducting safe burials, and launching public health campaigns to educate the population about the virus.
