Royal Scottish National Hospital

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Royal Scottish National Hospital (RSNH) was a psychiatric hospital located in Larbert, Scotland. It was one of the first institutions in Scotland to be designed and built as a psychiatric hospital with a history dating back to the 19th century.

History[edit | edit source]

The Royal Scottish National Hospital was established in 1862 as the Scottish National Institution for the Education of Imbecile Children. It was one of the first institutions in Scotland specifically designed for the care of mentally ill children. The hospital was later renamed the Royal Scottish National Institution and eventually became the Royal Scottish National Hospital.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The hospital was situated on a 400-acre site and had a capacity of over 1,000 patients. The facilities included wards, a school, workshops, a farm, and a chapel. The hospital also had its own water supply and sewage treatment facilities.

Closure[edit | edit source]

The Royal Scottish National Hospital closed in 2002. The site has since been redeveloped into a new community called Kinnaird Village. The chapel and some of the original hospital buildings have been preserved and incorporated into the new development.
