San Diego County is a county located in the southwestern corner of the State of California, in the United States. With more than 3 million residents as of the latest census, it is the second-most populous county in California and the fifth-most populous in the United States. The county seat is the city of San Diego, which is also the eighth-largest city in the United States. San Diego County comprises the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

San Diego County spans 4,526 square miles, making it the fifth-largest county by area in California. It features a diverse landscape that includes coastal beaches, inland valleys, mountains, and deserts. The western boundary of the county is the Pacific Ocean, and it shares a border with Mexico to the south, making it a key location for international trade and cultural exchange. Notable geographical features include the Laguna Mountains, the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and over 70 miles of coastline.

The area that is now San Diego County has been inhabited for more than 10,000 years, first by the Kumeyaay people. The first European to visit the region was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, who claimed it for Spain. The area became part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, the region came under U.S. control after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. San Diego County was one of the original counties of California, established on February 18, 1850.

San Diego County's economy is diverse, with key sectors including defense/military, tourism, international trade, and biotechnology. The county is home to several major military bases, including Naval Base San Diego, the largest naval base on the West Coast.
