Plot[edit | edit source]

The story follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule, as they arrive at Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando, who was incarcerated for drowning her three children. As they delve deeper into the investigation, Daniels uncovers shocking truths about the island, the hospital, and his own life. The investigation leads Daniels to confront his own psychological traumas, ultimately revealing that he is actually Andrew Laeddis, a patient at the hospital who murdered his manic depressive wife after she drowned their children.

Production[edit | edit source]

The production of Shutter Island began in March 2008. Scorsese's adaptation of Lehane's novel was filmed on location in Massachusetts, including the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.
