Smarties are a type of tablet candy produced by Smarties Candy Company since 1949. They are small, round, and come in various pastel colors. Smarties are known for their distinctive tart flavor and are a popular treat in the United States and Canada.

History[edit | edit source]

Smarties were first created by Edward Dee, an English immigrant who founded the Smarties Candy Company in New Jersey. The company originally operated under the name Ce De Candy, Inc. before rebranding to Smarties Candy Company in 2011. The candy has remained largely unchanged since its inception, maintaining its classic recipe and packaging.

Production[edit | edit source]

Smarties are made from a mixture of dextrose, citric acid, calcium stearate, artificial flavors, and food coloring. The ingredients are combined and pressed into tablets, which are then wrapped in rolls of clear plastic. Each roll typically contains 15 Smarties tablets.

Varieties[edit | edit source]

While the original Smarties are the most well-known, the Smarties Candy Company has also produced several variations over the years. These include:

  • Mega Smarties: Larger versions of the original tablets.
  • Smarties Double Lollies: Lollipops made from the same ingredients as Smarties tablets.
  • Smarties Candy Money: Coin-shaped Smarties tablets.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Smarties have become a staple in Halloween candy assortments and are often used in classroom settings as rewards for students. Their long shelf life and non-chocolate composition make them a popular choice for various occasions.

Similar Products[edit | edit source]

Smarties should not be confused with the chocolate-based candy of the same name produced by Nestlé in Canada and other countries. In the United States, the chocolate Smarties are sold under the name Rockets (candy) to avoid confusion.
