Steers (restaurant)

Steers is a South African fast food restaurant chain, founded in 1960 by George Halamandres. It is part of the Famous Brands group and has a substantial presence in many parts of Africa and beyond. The restaurant is well-known for its flame-grilled burgers and hand-cut chips.

George Halamandres, a Greek immigrant, founded Steers in 1960. The first restaurant was opened in Johannesburg, South Africa. The brand was initially known as Golden Spur, but was later renamed to Steers to better reflect its menu offerings.

Menu[edit | edit source]

Steers' menu primarily consists of hamburgers, chicken products, ribs, and milkshakes. The restaurant is particularly famous for its flame-grilled burgers, which are made from 100% pure beef. Steers also offers a variety of sides, including hand-cut chips, coleslaw, and onion rings.

Expansion[edit | edit source]

Steers has expanded significantly since its inception. As of 2020, the chain has over 600 outlets in 15 countries, including Botswana, Zambia, Mauritius, and the United Kingdom. The brand's international expansion is managed by Famous Brands, which acquired Steers in 1994.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

Steers has received numerous awards for its food and service. The restaurant has been voted the Best Burger in South Africa for 18 years in a row by the Sunday Times Top Brands survey. In addition, Steers has been recognized as the Best Chips in the country for 14 years.
