Stephen Hawking (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018) was a renowned British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author. He was the director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England. He attended University College, Oxford, where he studied physics and chemistry. He later moved to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he pursued his PhD in cosmology.

Career[edit | edit source]

Hawking's work focused on the intersections of quantum mechanics and general relativity. He proposed that black holes emit radiation, a theory now known as Hawking radiation. He also made significant contributions to the theory of cosmic inflation.

In addition to his scientific work, Hawking was a popular author. His book, A Brief History of Time, was a bestseller and introduced many people to complex scientific concepts.

Personal Life and Death[edit | edit source]

Hawking was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease in 1963, which left him almost completely paralyzed. Despite his physical limitations, he continued to work and make significant contributions to science. He died on 14 March 2018 at the age of 76.

Hawking's contributions to science have left a lasting legacy. His theories have shaped modern cosmology and his books have brought science to a wider audience. He is remembered as one of the greatest minds in physics.
