The Sugar Pine (Pinus lambertiana) is the largest species of pine, notable for its impressive height and distinctive, long cones. Native to the mountain ranges of the western United States, particularly the Sierra Nevada, the Sugar Pine plays a crucial role in its ecosystem and has significant historical and economic importance.

The Sugar Pine is renowned for its size, capable of reaching heights of up to 200-275 feet (61-84 meters), making it one of the tallest pine species. Its diameter can span up to 11.5 feet (3.5 meters), with a broad, open crown composed of long, drooping branches. The bark is thick and furrowed, providing protection from fire. The needles of the Sugar Pine are blue-green, arranged in bundles of five, and can be up to 4 inches (10 cm) long. However, the most distinctive feature of the Sugar Pine is its cones, which are the longest of any pine species, reaching lengths of 11-20 inches (28-51 cm).

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Sugar Pines are found in the mountainous regions of the western United States, from Oregon through California and into Baja California in Mexico. They thrive at elevations between 3,000 and 7,000 feet (900-2,100 meters), predominantly in mixed conifer forests alongside other pine species, firs, and cedars. The Sugar Pine prefers well-drained, moist soils but can adapt to a variety of soil types.
