Table reservation

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Table reservation is a process used by restaurants and other food service establishments to allow customers to secure a spot at their venue at a specific time. This practice is common in many countries and is often used for busy times or large parties.

Overview[edit | edit source]

A table reservation is typically made either in person, over the phone, or increasingly, online. The customer will provide their name, the number of people in their party, and the desired time and date. The restaurant will then reserve a table for that party, ensuring that it is not given to other customers. This allows the customer to bypass any waiting times and have a guaranteed spot at the restaurant.

Online Reservations[edit | edit source]

With the advent of the internet, many restaurants have begun offering online reservations. This allows customers to make a reservation at any time, without needing to call during business hours. Some restaurants use their own websites for this, while others use third-party platforms like OpenTable, Resy, or Yelp Reservations. These platforms often offer additional features, like email confirmations, reminders, and the ability to cancel or modify the reservation.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

Table reservations offer benefits to both the customer and the restaurant. For the customer, it ensures they have a spot at the restaurant and can avoid waiting. For the restaurant, it helps manage customer flow and plan for staffing and food needs. It can also increase revenue, as a table that is reserved is a guaranteed sale.

Criticisms[edit | edit source]

Despite the benefits, table reservations have also faced criticism. Some argue that it can lead to empty tables if customers don't show up for their reservation, reducing the restaurant's revenue. Others argue that it can create a two-tier system, where those who reserve tables get preferential treatment over walk-in customers.
