The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is a major voluntary health organization in the United States, dedicated to preventing kidney disease, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.

The National Kidney Foundation was established in 1950 by the parents of a toddler who died from complications of nephritis. They wanted to create an organization that would fund research to find a cure for kidney disease and improve the lives of those living with it.

The mission of the NKF is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

The NKF offers a variety of programs and services for patients, their families, and healthcare professionals. These include patient education, professional education, early detection screenings, advocacy, and research.

The NKF has been a major source of all kidney-related research in the United States. It has funded more than $100 million in kidney research since its inception.

The NKF advocates for policies that improve the health and well-being of people with kidney disease, those at risk for kidney disease, and those who care for them.
