Valencia Pride

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Valencia Pride is a cultivar of mango that originated from South Florida. The fruit is renowned for its excellent flavor, unparalleled disease resistance, and prolonged harvest period. Valencia Pride mangoes are large, with an average weight of 21 oz and a long, slender shape. The skin color is striking, with a predominant deep blush of red over a yellow-orange base. The flesh is firm, fiberless, and has a rich, aromatic flavor that is overarchingly sweet.

History[edit | edit source]

The Valencia Pride mango tree was planted by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Zapiain in Miami, Florida in 1941. The tree first fruited in 1946 and was named after their residence on Valencia Road. The parent tree is still alive and producing fruit as of 2021.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Valencia Pride mangoes are grown in various parts of the world, including the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia. They are particularly popular in Florida due to their resistance to Anthracnose, a common fungal disease of mangoes.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Valencia Pride mangoes are primarily eaten fresh, but they can also be used in mango-based recipes such as salads, salsas, smoothies, and desserts. Their firm flesh makes them ideal for grilling or using in cooked dishes.
