WakeMed Health and Hospitals is a healthcare system based in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded in 1961 and currently operates three hospitals and eight outpatient facilities in the Wake County area. The system provides a wide range of specialized services including cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics, high-risk pregnancy care, children's care, trauma, physical rehabilitation, and critical care transport.

History

The construction of WakeMed was approved through a voter-authorized bond issue in 1955. Originally known as Memorial Hospital of Wake County, it opened in 1961 with 380 beds and 50 doctors. Over the years, WakeMed has evolved into a private, not-for-profit corporation that serves multiple counties in North Carolina.

As of March 2020, WakeMed is the only provider of several specialized services in Wake County. These include a Level I Trauma Center, a licensed rehabilitation hospital, a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a neuro intensive care unit, a children's intensive care unit, and various specialized pediatric programs. WakeMed also operates the Women's Pavilion and Birthplace in Cary, as well as an Emergency Services Institute and a Patient Simulation Center for training health professionals.

WakeMed Raleigh Campus

The WakeMed Raleigh Campus is the largest facility in the WakeMed system. It houses six adult intensive care units, a same-day surgery center, two 24-hour emergency departments (one for adults and another for children), and an 84-bed rehabilitation hospital.
