The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia and several other wiki-based projects. It was established in 2003 by Jimmy Wales to support the growth and development of free knowledge projects.

The Wikimedia Foundation was officially incorporated on June 20, 2003, in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA. The foundation was created to manage the operations of Wikipedia, which had grown significantly since its launch in 2001. The foundation's headquarters were later moved to San Francisco, California.

Mission[edit | edit source]

The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally. The foundation aims to make knowledge freely accessible to everyone.

The Wikimedia Foundation operates several major projects, including:

  • Wikipedia - A free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project.
  • Wiktionary - A collaborative project to produce a free multilingual dictionary.

  • Wikimedia Commons - A repository of free-use images, sound, and other media files.
  • Wikinews - A free-content news source.
  • Wikiquote - A collection of quotations.

The Wikimedia Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees, which is responsible for overseeing the foundation's operations and strategic direction. The board consists of community-elected members, appointed members, and founder Jimmy Wales.

The Wikimedia Foundation is primarily funded through donations from individuals, with additional support from grants and sponsorships. The foundation conducts annual fundraising campaigns to support its operations and projects.
