Worshipful Company of Distillers is a Livery Company within the City of London, England. Established by Royal Charter in 1638, its origins can be traced back to the early 15th century when distillers of London, who were producing spirits from grain, formed a guild. The Company was originally formed to regulate the distillation industry within the city, ensuring quality and standards were maintained, to protect the interests of its members, and to provide for their welfare and that of their families.

History[edit | edit source]

The distillation of spirits in London dates back to at least the 12th century, but it was not until the 15th century that distillers began to organize themselves into a trade guild. The Worshipful Company of Distillers was granted its Royal Charter by King Charles I in 1638, formalizing its status and powers. The Charter gave the Company authority over the distillation trade in London and within a 21-mile radius of the city, allowing it to set standards, regulate practices, and enforce laws related to the distillation of spirits.

Throughout its history, the Company has adapted to the changing landscape of the distillation industry, including the transition from a focus on spirits for medicinal purposes to the commercial production of spirits such as gin, which became particularly popular in London in the 18th century. Despite these changes, the Company has remained committed to its original objectives of promoting the highest standards of quality and integrity in the distillation industry.
