Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is a medical school in England that was established in 2002. It is a partnership between the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex, along with the NHS in the South East region. BSMS is known for its innovative curriculum and strong emphasis on clinical practice and research.

History[edit | edit source]

BSMS was founded in response to a national shortage of doctors and the need for more medical schools in the UK. The school was officially opened in 2003 by the then Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milburn. Since its inception, BSMS has grown rapidly and has become one of the leading medical schools in the country.

Curriculum[edit | edit source]

The curriculum at BSMS is designed to integrate basic medical sciences with clinical practice. The course is divided into two phases: the first two years focus on foundational medical sciences, while the final three years are dedicated to clinical practice in various healthcare settings. The school employs a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, and problem-based learning.

Phase 1[edit | edit source]

During the first phase, students study subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. They also begin to develop clinical skills through early patient contact and clinical placements.

Phase 2[edit | edit source]

In the second phase, students undertake clinical rotations in specialties such as general practice, surgery, psychiatry, and pediatrics. They also have the opportunity to engage in elective placements, both in the UK and abroad.

Research[edit | edit source]

BSMS has a strong research focus, with particular strengths in areas such as global health, neuroscience, and primary care. The school collaborates with various research institutions and healthcare providers to advance medical knowledge and improve patient care.

Facilities[edit | edit source]

The medical school is based on both the University of Brighton and University of Sussex campuses. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including modern lecture theatres, clinical skills labs, and research laboratories. The school also has access to several teaching hospitals in the region, providing students with a diverse range of clinical experiences.

Admissions[edit | edit source]

Admission to BSMS is highly competitive. Prospective students must have strong academic credentials and demonstrate a commitment to a career in medicine. The selection process includes an assessment of academic qualifications, a personal statement, and an interview.
