Cephalohematoma

A cephalohematoma is a medical condition characterized by the accumulation of blood between the skull and the periosteum of a newborn baby. This condition typically occurs due to trauma during childbirth, such as pressure exerted on the baby's head during delivery.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of a cephalohematoma is a noticeable swelling on the baby's head, usually appearing a few hours after birth. The swelling is often soft to the touch and may feel like a fluid-filled lump.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Cephalohematomas are commonly caused by the pressure exerted on the baby's head during delivery. This pressure can result in the rupture of blood vessels between the skull and the periosteum, leading to the accumulation of blood in that area.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosing a cephalohematoma is usually done through a physical examination of the baby's head. In some cases, imaging tests such as ultrasound may be used to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the hematoma.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

In most cases, cephalohematomas do not require treatment as they tend to resolve on their own over time. However, monitoring the condition is important to ensure that there are no complications such as infection or anemia.

Complications[edit | edit source]

Although rare, complications of cephalohematomas can include infection, anemia, or the formation of a subperiosteal abscess. These complications may require medical intervention to prevent further issues.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Preventing cephalohematomas is not always possible, as they are often a result of the birthing process. However, healthcare providers can take steps to minimize the risk of trauma during delivery and reduce the likelihood of this condition occurring.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for infants with cephalohematomas is generally good, as the condition tends to resolve on its own without long-term consequences. However, close monitoring and follow-up care may be necessary to ensure the baby's health and well-being.
