The Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to improving the nutritional health of the populations in Central America and Panama. Established in 1949, INCAP operates under the auspices of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and is headquartered in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

History[edit]

INCAP was founded in response to the widespread malnutrition and related health issues prevalent in the region during the mid-20th century. The institute was established with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and PAHO, aiming to address these critical health challenges through research, education, and policy development.

Objectives[edit]

The primary objectives of INCAP include:

  • Conducting research on nutritional deficiencies and their impact on public health.
  • Developing and promoting nutritional guidelines and policies.
  • Providing technical assistance and training to health professionals in the region.
  • Implementing community-based nutrition programs to improve dietary practices.

Research and Programs[edit]

INCAP has been instrumental in conducting pioneering research on various aspects of nutrition, including the study of micronutrient deficiencies, childhood malnutrition, and the impact of diet on chronic diseases. The institute has also developed several successful nutrition programs, such as:

  • The fortification of staple foods with essential vitamins and minerals.
  • School feeding programs to improve the nutritional status of children.
  • Community nutrition education initiatives to promote healthy eating habits.

Collaborations[edit]

INCAP collaborates with numerous national and international organizations, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and academic institutions. These partnerships enhance the institute's capacity to address complex nutritional issues and implement effective interventions across the region.

Impact[edit]

Over the decades, INCAP has significantly contributed to the improvement of nutritional health in Central America and Panama. Its research findings have informed public health policies and programs, leading to a reduction in malnutrition rates and the prevention of nutrition-related diseases.
