Li Shizhen (July 3, 1518 – 1593) was a renowned Chinese pharmacist, herbalist, and scientist who made significant contributions to the field of traditional Chinese medicine. He is best known for his monumental work, the Bencao Gangmu (本草纲目), also known in English as the Compendium of Materia Medica. This encyclopedia of herbal medicine is considered one of the most comprehensive and influential herbal works in the history of Chinese medicine.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Li Shizhen was born in Qizhou (now part of Hubei province) in a family with a long tradition of medical practice. His father, Li Yanwen, was a respected doctor who encouraged his son to pursue a career in medicine. Despite initially failing the imperial examinations, Li Shizhen devoted himself to the study of medicine under the guidance of his father and other local practitioners.

Throughout his life, Li Shizhen traveled extensively to collect medicinal substances and to learn from other practitioners. His dedication to understanding the properties and uses of herbs was unmatched. He spent over 40 years compiling the Bencao Gangmu, which was completed in 1578 but published posthumously.

Bencao Gangmu[edit | edit source]

The Bencao Gangmu is a monumental work in the history of pharmacology and botany. It contains detailed descriptions of over 1,800 medicinal substances, including herbs, minerals, and animal products, and their applications in treatment. The work is divided into 52 volumes and covers over 11,000 prescriptions for various ailments. Li Shizhen's meticulous approach to classification and his critical evaluation of sources were revolutionary for his time.

Li Shizhen corrected many mistakes found in earlier pharmacopeias and rejected superstitions, emphasizing the importance of direct observation and practical experience in medical practice. His work also includes detailed illustrations of many medicinal plants and animals, contributing significantly to the fields of botany and zoology.

Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu has had a profound impact on the development of traditional Chinese medicine and has been translated into several languages, making it influential in the global history of medicine.
