Mounds (candy)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Mounds is a candy bar made by Hershey's, consisting of a filling of sweetened, shredded coconut covered by a layer of dark chocolate. It was first introduced in 1920 by the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company, which was later acquired by Hershey's in 1988.

History[edit | edit source]

The Mounds bar was created in 1920 by the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company in New Haven, Connecticut. The company was founded by six Armenian immigrants, including Peter Paul Halajian. The candy bar was originally sold for just five cents and was marketed as a unique two-piece candy bar, a format that was later changed.

In 1988, the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company was acquired by Hershey's, and Mounds became part of the Hershey's product line. Despite changes in ownership and production, the basic recipe and format of the Mounds bar have remained largely unchanged since its introduction.

Ingredients and Production[edit | edit source]

The primary ingredients of a Mounds bar are dark chocolate and sweetened, shredded coconut. The coconut is processed and mixed with corn syrup and sugar to create the sweet filling, which is then shaped into bars. These bars are then enrobed in a layer of dark chocolate.

The production of Mounds bars involves several steps. First, the coconut filling is prepared by mixing shredded coconut with corn syrup and sugar. This mixture is then shaped into bars and cooled. The bars are then coated with dark chocolate and cooled again to allow the chocolate to set.

Variations[edit | edit source]

There have been several variations of the Mounds bar over the years. The most notable is the Almond Joy, which is similar to a Mounds bar but includes whole almonds and is coated in milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate. Other variations have included different types of chocolate or additional ingredients.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

The Mounds bar has been featured in various aspects of popular culture. It has been mentioned in songs, films, and television shows, and has been used as a metaphor in various literary works.
