Pat's King of Steaks

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pat's King of Steaks is a popular Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded by Pat Olivieri in 1930, it is known for its role in the creation of the cheesesteak, a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll.

History[edit | edit source]

Pat Olivieri was a hot dog vendor in the 1930s when he decided to put some beef on his grill. A taxi driver noticed and asked for a steak sandwich instead of a hot dog. The taxi driver suggested that Olivieri quit making hot dogs and focus on the steak sandwiches. Olivieri opened up a shop on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue, and Pat's King of Steaks was born.

Menu[edit | edit source]

The menu at Pat's King of Steaks includes the original Philadelphia cheesesteak, along with variations that include different types of cheese and toppings. The restaurant is also known for its "Whiz Wit" cheesesteak, which is a cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz and onions.

Influence[edit | edit source]

Pat's King of Steaks has been influential in popularizing the Philadelphia cheesesteak both locally and nationally. It has been featured in numerous food shows and travel guides, and is a popular destination for tourists visiting Philadelphia.
