Sunset (mango)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sunset is a mango cultivar that originated in South Florida. The fruit is known for its vibrant color, which is reminiscent of a sunset, and its sweet, tropical flavor.

History[edit | edit source]

The Sunset mango was first propagated in the early 20th century in the tropical climate of South Florida. It is believed to be a seedling of the Haden mango, one of the most popular mango cultivars in the world.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Sunset mango is a medium-sized fruit, typically weighing between 10 and 16 ounces. It has a round to ovate shape, with a slightly flattened base. The skin of the fruit is smooth and leathery, turning from green to a deep orange-red color as it ripens. The flesh of the Sunset mango is deep orange, juicy, and fiberless, with a rich, sweet flavor.

Cultivation[edit | edit source]

Sunset mango trees are vigorous growers, reaching heights of up to 30 feet. They prefer a tropical to subtropical climate, with temperatures that do not fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The trees are moderately resistant to Anthracnose, a common fungal disease of mangoes.

Sunset mangoes are typically harvested in the late summer. The fruit has a good shelf life and is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing into products such as mango juice and mango chutney.
