Evandro Chagas (1905–1940) was a prominent Brazilian scientist and physician known for his significant contributions to the field of tropical medicine. He was born in Belém, in the state of Pará, Brazil, and was the son of the famous sanitarist Carlos Chagas, who discovered Chagas disease. Evandro Chagas's work primarily focused on virology, parasitology, and entomology, contributing to the understanding and control of various tropical diseases.

Early Life and Education

Evandro Chagas was born on August 6, 1905. Following in his father's footsteps, he pursued a career in medicine. He graduated from the Medical School of Rio de Janeiro, where he was influenced by the work and legacy of his father. His early exposure to the field of tropical medicine shaped his career path and research interests.

Career

After completing his medical education, Evandro Chagas dedicated himself to research in tropical diseases. He worked at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, a leading research institution in Brazil named after another towering figure in Brazilian public health, Oswaldo Cruz. At the institute, Chagas conducted groundbreaking research on various pathogens and vectors responsible for tropical diseases.

One of his notable contributions was in the study of encephalitis, particularly the Brazilian form known as Brazilian encephalitis. His work helped in understanding the epidemiology and control measures of this and other diseases. Chagas also explored the role of insects as vectors in the transmission of diseases, contributing to the field of entomology with his research on the biology and ecology of these vectors.

Legacy

Evandro Chagas's career was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash in 1940, at the age of 35. Despite his brief career, his contributions to tropical medicine were significant. He left behind a legacy of dedication to public health in Brazil and made important strides in the research of tropical diseases.

In his honor, the Evandro Chagas Institute (Instituto Evandro Chagas) was named after him.
